“As a Family Service Coordinator, I often assist individuals in navigating the complex world of health insurance and social services. But on this particular day, a man walked into our office with a story that would leave a lasting impression on me. He was from out of state and had recently arrived in California, hoping for a fresh beginning. His visit was driven by a simple yet profoundly significant issue – he didn’t know how to transition his health insurance to California. Moreover, he was considered homeless and faced the daily struggle of putting food on the table. As he shared his situation, I could see the worry and frustration in his eyes.
Without hesitation, I reassured him that we were here to help, not only with his health insurance transition but also with the application for CalFresh, a vital lifeline for those in need of assistance with groceries. Together, we embarked on the process of applying for CalFresh, and as we submitted the application, I saw a glimmer of relief in his eyes. It was a step towards ensuring he had enough to eat, and that alone felt like a victory.”
A Rapid Turnaround
“Remarkably, within just an hour of submitting his CalFresh application, his phone rang. It was CalFresh calling to schedule his interview. The very next day, he was picking up his EBT card, a tangible symbol of the support he had received in such a short span of time.
As he held his EBT card in hand, he couldn’t help but express his amazement at the services we provided. He was genuinely surprised that there was a place like StLRS where people would go the extra mile to provide the assistance he so desperately needed. In that moment, I couldn’t help but feel an immense sense of fulfillment. We had made a real difference in this man’s life, and it was a powerful reminder of why we do what we do.”
