CalFresh Update: What the Federal Government Shutdown Means for Your Benefits

Oct 24, 2025 6:51:46 PM • Updates (see all) admin

At St. Louise Resource Services (StLRS), we want to make sure our community stays informed about how the current federal government shutdown may impact CalFresh benefits in the coming weeks.

As of now, October CalFresh benefits have been issued as normal, but if the shutdown continues into November, there may be delays or interruptions in future payments.

What This Means for CalFresh Recipients

According to the California Department of Social Services (CDSS) and Governor Gavin Newsom’s office, families can expect:

  • October benefits remain safe — all payments have been distributed as usual.

  • ⚠️ Potential November delays — if Congress does not act soon, November benefits may be postponed or temporarily unavailable.

  • 🕒 New applications and renewals may process more slowly, especially those submitted after mid-October.

  • 🍎 Other nutrition programs (like WIC) are continuing for now, but could also be affected if the shutdown lasts several more weeks.

Governor Newsom has also announced that the California National Guard is preparing to support local food banks in case food-assistance delays increase demand statewide.

What You Can Do Right Now

Here are a few steps we recommend for all CalFresh participants and applicants:

  1. Continue using your CalFresh EBT card as usual — your October benefits are not affected.
  2. Stay alert for updates from your county or CDSS about November payments.
  3. Submit renewals, SAR 7 forms, and new applications on time. These will still be processed, though delays may occur.
  4. Explore local food-support options in case benefits are delayed — food banks, pantries, and community organizations can help bridge the gap.
  5. Be cautious of scams. Only use official websites and the real ebtEDGE app (www.ebtEDGE.com) to check your balance or messages.
  6. Contact StLRS if you need help understanding your benefits, completing forms, or finding local food resources.
